World Cup 2026 Tournament Overview
FIFA World Cup 2026 uses a 48-team format and includes 104 matches across 16 host cities. It is the first men’s World Cup shared by three countries and the first to include a Round of 32.
Mexico City is where the opening match is happening on 11 June. Then Toronto is where Canada plays its match on 12 June. Los Angeles is where the USA plays its match on the same day. The final match is on 19 July at New York New Jersey Stadium.
There are 48 teams. They all said they are coming after the last chance to get in ended on March 31 2026. The people, in charge have figured out all the match dates and the cities where the matches will be. They also know which venues will be used for each stage. This makes it a lot easier for people to plan.

Group Stage Schedule — June 11 to June 27
The group stage has 72 matches and 12 groups with four teams in each group. Every team plays three matches. The schedule is busy from the first day until 27 June.
This part of the tournament is really long and very busy for the fans of the teams. It is important for teams to win early. The last day of group matches can change everything really quickly because many groups are still not decided until the very last match of the group stage. The group stage is the busiest part of the tournament, for the teams and the fans.
How the Group Stage Works
The top two teams in each group will get to move on. The eight best teams that come in place also get to go through which makes the difference in goals and the number of goals scored really important.
This new way of doing things keeps teams in the running and that should make things pretty tough, on the third day of matches. If a team scores a goal late in the game that could be the thing that decides which teams make it to the Round of 32 and which teams have to go home. The Round of 32 is what teams are working towards. They do not want to go home.
Opening Matches to Watch
- Mexico v South Africa opens the tournament on Thursday, 11 June at Mexico City Stadium.
- On the same day, South Korea face Czech Republic at Estadio Guadalajara.
- Canada start on Friday, 12 June at Toronto Stadium against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

New Round of 32 — June 28 to July 3
The Round of 32 is a deal in the mens World Cup. It starts on 28 June. Goes on until 3 July. In this round 32 teams play 16 matches and only the best teams will move forward. This round is good for teams that did well in the group stage. It also gives teams that came third a chance to keep playing.
The Round of 32 should make the move from group football to knockout football more exciting. The pressure will be high, in these knockout matches. The teams will have to play their football to win.
Knockout Stage Schedule — July 4 to July 19
The World Cup has a lot of games. The Round of 16 is from 4 to 7 July. Then the Quarter-finals are from 9 to 11 July. After that the Round of 16 and Quarter-finals are done we have the semi-finals on 14 and 15 July. The World Cup teams that lose in the semi-finals play each other on 18 July. The World Cup final is on 19 July.

The Round of 16 has sixteen World Cup teams. Then eight World Cup teams are left for the Quarter-finals. The Quarter-finals has eight teams and four teams reach the semi-finals. The semi-finals has four teams and two teams reach the World Cup final. Every game is very important. The World Cup teams have to be careful because they do not have a lot of time to rest and they cannot make a lot of mistakes. The World Cup is very exciting.
Quarter Finals — July 9 to July 11
The quarter finals are all set to take place at Boston Stadium on July 9. Then we have Los Angeles Stadium on July 10. The day on July 11 there are two matches, one at Miami Stadium and the other at Kansas City Stadium. These four quarter finals matches will decide the four teams that will be playing. The quarter finals are really important because they will choose the four teams, for us.
Semi Finals — July 14 to July 15
The semi-finals are set for Dallas Stadium on Tuesday, 14 July and Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday 15 July. These stadiums are in positions in the last week of the competition. The semi-finals, in Dallas Stadium and Atlanta Stadium are almost ready to go.
Final — July 19
The final match will be held at New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday 19 July. The schedule shows that the kickoff is, at 15:00 time. This is the match of the tournament and it will be played at New York New Jersey Stadium.
