Chelsea 2026-27: Squad, Players, Stadium, and Kits Guide

Chelsea 2026-27

Chelsea begin 2026-27 with a new manager and a squad that looks very different from the one that finished tenth last season. Xabi Alonso took charge in July, while Emiliano Martínez, Maxence Lacroix, Morgan Rogers, Geovany Quenda and several other arrivals changed the balance of the team.

The quality is obvious, but the questions are just as clear. Chelsea need to defend more reliably, build a settled midfield after Enzo Fernández’s departure and give Cole Palmer enough freedom to decide matches without making the whole attack depend on him.

This guide uses Chelsea and Premier League information checked on 4 September 2026. It covers the current squad, shirt numbers, Xabi Alonso, Stamford Bridge, Nike kits, recent league finishes, history, honours, rivals, tactics and common supporter questions.

About Chelsea

Chelsea were founded in 1905 at the Rising Sun pub, opposite the entrance to Stamford Bridge. The stadium already existed, so the club was created to play there rather than moving into the ground years later.

The club won its first English league title in 1954-55 under Ted Drake. He also replaced the old Pensioners identity with the Blues nickname and introduced the lion symbol that still shapes Chelsea’s badge and kit designs.

Chelsea became a regular cup winner in the 1960s and 1970s, then faced serious financial problems before recovering under Ken Bates. The arrival of Roman Abramovich in 2003 brought a new level of spending and ambition, with José Mourinho’s 2004-05 side winning the league while conceding only 15 goals.

The modern record includes Champions League wins in 2012 and 2021, Europa League titles in 2013 and 2019, and the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in 2025. BlueCo took control in 2022 and has since built one of the youngest and largest playing groups in English football.

2026-27 Season Preview

Chelsea finished tenth in 2025-26 with 52 points, a sharp fall from fourth place the year before. Alonso’s first task is to turn a talented group into a team that produces the same level from one week to the next.

The new squad gives him several ways to play. Martínez adds experience in goal, Lacroix brings recovery pace at centre-back, Henderson offers leadership in midfield, and Rogers can carry the ball through pressure. João Pedro, Palmer, Neto and Estêvão give Chelsea enough skill to change positions around the penalty area.

There are risks. Reece James, Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill and Roméo Lavia have all had injury interruptions in recent seasons, while many summer arrivals still need time to learn each other’s movement. Alonso also has to decide whether Caicedo needs a fixed partner or a rotating group around him.

A return to the Champions League places is the clear domestic target. Chelsea have the individual ability to reach the top four, but they will need fewer defensive errors and better results against organised sides that deny Palmer space.

Chelsea Recent Standings

Chelsea’s recent league record shows why 2026-27 matters. Mauricio Pochettino recovered to sixth in 2023-24, Enzo Maresca reached fourth in 2024-25, but the team fell to tenth in 2025-26. Alonso inherits a squad built to return to the Champions League places.

Chelsea Manager: Xabi Alonso

Xabi Alonso began his Chelsea role on 1 July 2026 on a four-year contract. His official Chelsea profile highlights his unbeaten Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen in 2023-24 and the DFB-Pokal won in the same season.

Alonso’s teams build with patience but look forward once a passing lane opens. One wing-back or full-back can push high while the opposite side stays deeper, and central midfielders rotate to give the back line a safe first pass.

At Chelsea, his biggest decision is how to connect Caicedo, Palmer and the front line. The team has several players who prefer receiving between the lines, so spacing will matter as much as the names selected.

Chelsea Stadium: Stamford Bridge

Stamford Bridge has been Chelsea’s home since the club was founded in 1905. The ground stands on Fulham Road in west London and Chelsea’s official visitor information lists its capacity as 40,341.

Fulham Broadway is the nearest Underground station. The stadium is tightly built into its neighbourhood, with the West Stand, East Stand, Matthew Harding Stand and Shed End close to the pitch.

Stamford Bridge opened as an athletics venue in 1877 and has been rebuilt in stages. The East Stand opened in 1974, while the modern West Stand was completed in 2001. Any future redevelopment has to work around transport, local planning and the Chelsea Pitch Owners arrangement.

Chelsea Kits 2026-27

Nike supplies Chelsea’s 2026-27 kits. The home and away shirts were officially released before the season; an official 2026-27 third-kit launch was not available when this guide was checked on 4 September 2026.

Chelsea History

Chelsea won the English title for the first time in 1954-55. Tommy Docherty’s young side brought League Cup success in 1965, and Dave Sexton later led the club to the 1970 FA Cup and 1971 European Cup Winners’ Cup.

Financial trouble followed the ambitious rebuilding of Stamford Bridge, and Chelsea spent part of the 1980s outside the top flight. The club recovered, returned to cup contention in the 1990s and won the FA Cup in 1997 and 2000.

Mourinho’s arrival in 2004 produced back-to-back Premier League titles. Chelsea later won the 2012 Champions League final against Bayern Munich in Munich, then lifted the trophy again under Thomas Tuchel in 2021.

The club added the Europa Conference League and the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in 2025. Those wins made Chelsea the first club to collect every major current UEFA men’s club competition.

Chelsea Rivals

Tottenham Hotspur are Chelsea’s fiercest London rivals for many supporters. The fixture carries decades of bad feeling, important cup ties and regular battles near the top of the Premier League.

Arsenal are another major London rival, while matches with Liverpool became especially intense during repeated league, cup and Champions League meetings in the 2000s. Fulham are the closest neighbours to Stamford Bridge, giving that fixture a strong local character.

Chelsea Tactical Outlook

Alonso is likely to use a back three in some phases even when the team is listed in a four-defender shape. A full-back can move high, another defender can step into midfield, and Caicedo can protect the centre while Chelsea build attacks.

Palmer remains the main creator. He is most dangerous when he receives on the half-turn near the right side of the penalty area, with a runner outside him and a striker occupying the centre-backs.

Rogers gives Chelsea a direct carrier from midfield, while Neto, Gittens, Quenda and Estêvão can stretch the pitch. The challenge is to keep enough players behind the ball when those wide players and full-backs attack at the same time.

Without the ball, Alonso wants the front line to guide play toward one side before midfield steps up. If that first press is broken, the speed of Lacroix and Fofana can help, but the distance between Chelsea’s lines must stay short.

Transfers and Squad Building

Chelsea’s summer changed the spine of the side. Martínez came in for goalkeeping experience, Lacroix strengthened central defence, Henderson added leadership, and Rogers became a new ball-carrying option in midfield.

The attacking group also changed. Quenda, Emegha and Welbeck joined a front line that already included Palmer, João Pedro, Neto, Gittens and Estêvão. That gives Alonso variety, but it also creates a selection problem if too many players want the same central spaces.

The current squad pages no longer list several players who appeared in Chelsea’s earlier summer number announcement. This guide follows the post-window Chelsea and Premier League first-team lists rather than retaining names that had moved out of the group.
